Abstract

Russian textile printing art — manufacturing of printed fabrics — dates back to the early Middle Ages. Prevailing in past processing methods of printed fabrics’ production formed and defined ornate motifs and color schemes transmitted by craftsmen from generation to generation without any significant changes. Specifics of applying of printed fabrics in Russia, as well as the prominent role of monasteries in the development of the textile technologies formed a distinctive attitude to this craft as a sacred one. The appearance of the first manufactures in the early XVIII century did not lead to any substantial changes in technology. Not only the art of handicraft printed cloth did flourish for a century, existing in close neighborhood of the factory, it also experienced its highest growth, through borrowing new technologies. Later on handicraft techniques in the design and printing on fabric retained on the largest textile manufactures till the early twentieth century. Which largely determined deep commitment to the tradition and continuity in the Russian design of the print pattern on the fabric.
