- Abstract: In the modern world reality the issues of understanding the past and cultural heritage are as relevant as ever. History and culture are at the forefront of political processes related to generating of the concepts that unify national communities, but at the same time they form a battlefield where clashes can have a devastating impact on the social and state structure. The historical memory of communities is shaped by key events and personalities. Russian historical development is closely intertwined with a religious component. The Holy Trinity‑St. Sergius Lavra, the spiritual and cultural Orthodox faith center, has been the sacral symbol of Russia for many centuries. Since 1917, Russian ideological foundation that largely interrelated with a religious component, has been in danger of complete destruction. This paper examines the role of Patriarch Tikhon, who is called upon to defend both the Church and Russia itself, with its thousand‑year history and values. In the context of the deep identity crisis of Russian society and the religion persecution, the efforts of the intercessors and ascetics helped to preserve moral and spiritual principles, the heritage, memory and cultural basis of national identity.
