  • Abstract: The review addresses a collective monograph published in 2023: The History of Udmurt Literature: the end of the XIX — the middle of the XX century / editorial board: V.M. Vanyushev (executive editor): Udmurt Institute of History, Language and Literature of the Udmurt Federal Research Center of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences [and others]. Izhevsk, 2023. Creating a history of Russia's national literatures is a difficult and controversial task, and at the same time highly relevant. The reviewed publication is one of the successful and worthy examples of such research. Its appearance is long overdue, since the previous edition of this kind was published in 1988. The team of authors managed to avoid the ideological unfreedom and errors of their predecessors. Scientists have managed to find an ideal principle for reflecting in the history of the literary process, on the one hand, social problems, to which literature always responds sensitively, on the other hand, the analysis of the material in the book is immanent, intra‑literary in nature. The review examines a peculiar optics of the history of national literature, given through the analysis of the close genetic links of national literature with Russian literature, which have been described many times and repeatedly indicated. It is these connections that determine the spiritual roots of Udmurt literature, which are characterized by the church and, broader, Christian context.
