- Abstract: In 1620 the Czech Republic lost its independence. The Germanization of the country took place. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the so‑called awakeners appeared in the country, and the National Revival (Obrození) began. If the very beginnings of the National Renaissance were still based on the aesthetics of the Enlightenment and classicism, then its flowering was more in line with the aesthetic principles of romanticism. In addition, at the beginning of the nineteenth century Czech art developed in the Austro‑German cultural environment. Czech classicism, like all Czech culture, was “late” in comparison with the West. We can talk about an accelerated cultural process, which consists in the fact that “late” cultures enter one or another stage of their development, when “advanced” cultures have passed it and moved on to the next stage. Lagging cultures have the opportunity to use the experience of advanced cultures in their development, which often leads to a mixture of directions. Karel Postl (1770–1818) was the representative of the classicist trend in the visual arts of the Czech Republic. As for Antonin Manes (1784–1843) and Frantisek Tkadlik (1786–1840), their work intertwined classicist features with the romantic aesthetics of the National Renaissance and the realism of the emerging Biedermeier. Classicism in Czech painting was not a monolithic “international” phenomenon, like the Czech Baroque, it was a purely national phenomenon, where, in accordance with the views of the national revival and accelerated cultural process, the features of other directions intertwined
