Abstract

Devoted to the localization of monasteries as the main component of Pomorian sacred geography in the historical and cultural perspective the paper deals with its integral ideological message, typical of the medieval monasteries in general. The primary focus is on the structure and semiotics of the monasteries, founded during the Russian-Slavic reclamation of the Finno-Ugric territory Zavolochye and Dvina land. Monasteries became centers of the spiritual life and symbolic demonstration in geo-cultural space of Pomorye. Their mythological and sacral and architectural image blends with the surrounding natural landscape and endues the latter with a high spiritual and axiological status. Study, based on the structural-functional, hermeneutical and semiotic methods of analysis, emphasizes the main features associated with the identifying or marker role of images and symbols of the Transformation, Assumption, Intercession of the most Holy Mother of God, the Holy Trinity, Archangel Michael and Nicholas of Myra, which reveal the metaphysical topos of Pomorye.
