Abstract

The article looks at the work of Old Russian literature of the late 16th – early 17th century, “The Tale of the Life of Tsar Theodore Ivanovich”. This work was written by the first Russian patriarch Job. At first glance, the Life stands out among a number of works by Patriarch Job due to its apoliticality and lack of poignancy, and as so far as the time of its emerging did not correspond to the political moment of that time — the praise of the deceased tsar, and not his successor Boris Godunov. However, if we open the monument, we will find that the image of Boris Godunov in “The Tale” is not associated with Tsar Fyodor when reading, but rather with his father. Job considers Godunov to be doubly Terrible, who is twice as much as Father Fyodor Ivanovich in the indicated positive qualities, and indeed Fedor himself! At the same time, the characteristics of Boris encountered here are only a small part of the large-scale image of the last Rurikovich and his kingdom. The article answers the question: why did Patriarch Job bless Theodore so much and why didn’t he use the chance for Godunov’s real propaganda in The Tale, or did he use it?
