Abstract

The paper presents the results of a semantic study of language of the Russian mythological prose compared to a folktale. It examines the level of narrative subjects in the texts of different folk genres basing on the analysis of verbal markers of the narrator in the text. It also highlights different ways of organizing narrative in mythological prose and their specificity as opposed to a folktale narrative. Features of interpretation of the narrator`s position in a mythological story is determined by a set of parameters: narrator’s inclusion in the text (as a character and as a narrator), number of storytellers, their degree of personification, and functions of narrator in the text. Based on these characteristics, a typology of mythological prose texts is built. The study results in determining that, unlike in a fairy tale, where narrator is always outside the text, in mythological texts narrator always has a verbal representation. The author identifies the reasons for such features of the subjective organization of mythological stories and its differences from fairy tales — the modality of reliability and the inclusion of the text in the communication situation, in conversational discourse.
