Abstract

The paper examines the process of reorganization of the literary life at the turn of the 20th century related to the spring of modernism. Political division into liberals and conservatives gives way to the unity on an aesthetic basis. Russian symbolism was the first modernist movement that appeared in the 1890s as three independent groups initially not interrelated and even hostile to each other. The mainstream literature met the symbolism with open hostility which made the early symbolists move towards each other and form a community in the beginning of the 1900s, primarily on the pages of the almanac “The Northern Flowers”, and then in the first symbolist journal “The New Way”. It came to be the journal of a new type, focusing on the Western “revues”. The editors of the journal gave priority to personal originality over political views allowing to welcome a wide circle of the new art followers. The close union between symbolism and the contemporary art — painting, crafts, music and theatre — made symbolism the main branch of modernism thanks to which the first decades of the 20th century is commonly referred to as the Silver age of Russian culture.

Keywords

symbolism, “younger” and “older” symbolists, “Novyj put” (“New Way”), symbolism periodicals, Silver Age literature.
