Abstract

The paper examines Russian folk culture as a living creative tradition, which largely determines the Russian mentality, as well as the development of Russian civilization. Folklore studies, philological, as well as related scientific disciplines — for example, musicology, ethnology and history — play an essential role in this process. The study explores the characteristics of the existence of traditional folklore in a rough urbanized environment. While each of the mentioned disciplines deals with its local issues, only philological folklore studies is capable of bringing together all local research, putting to use the most important components of those disciplines. The author attempts to identify and define harmonic synthesis in the study of Russian folklore as the keeper of the Slavic ethnic gene pool. As the paper concludes the folklore field of Russia comes to be the last frontier of Russian civilization and statehood.
