Abstract

The paper addresses the functioning of the Russian folk song “Transvaal” in Russian prose of the 1920s. in the 20th – early 21st c. The topicality of the study is due to the unique fate of the song, which arose on the basis of the poem by G. A. Galina “Boer and His Sons”, and confidently made its way into the Russian folklore fund. This song — in a folk song form — was then perceived by writers as a significant phenomenon of the epoch and used in fiction prose. Unrelenting interest towards the song “Transvaal” in literature, cinema and music serves as a confirmation of its uniqueness. The first ever depiction of the folk song “Transvaal” functioning in the author's major prose attests to the study`s novelty. The paper comes to the conclusion about the participation of the motif-figurative system and plot of the song “Transvaal” in creating of a number of characters, motifs, and plotlines of the author prose under consideration. The paper revealed that the song “Transvaal” embeddes into the novels and stories in question with the help of several codes (folklore, binary opposition of traditional culture, developed / undeveloped area, code in its immediate meaning, memory code). The paper will be of interest for the subsequent study of intertextual relationships of folklore and fiction.
