Abstract |
The book by Director of the National pedagogical Museum and library, J. A. Komensky (Somepiis) in Prague, Marketa Pankova, is dedicated to the image of the great Czech philosopher and teacher in the Czech and world fine arts from 1642 to 2016. The paper traces the evolution of the image of Komensky from lifetime portraits to posthumous ones, emphasizing the symbolic significance of Komensky's contribution to the modern civilization. The author of the review pays special attention to the proof that the" Portrait of an old man" by Rembrandt is actually a portrait of Komensky. The work of M. Pankova is a comprehensive study performed at the highest scientific level. It demonstrates the major importance of Komensky for the world culture not to mention the culture of the Czech Republic. |
