Abstract |
The article provides analysis of the ancient Russian term “Gudenie” in interrelation with the musical notation close to it and applied alongside with it. The issue of understanding and applying of the ancient Russian musical and performing terminology, involving peculiarities of a specific historical period, remains relevant in the modern music science. As exemplified by the process of development of Russian musical culture, a whole group of terms changes its semantic significance due to the transformations taking place in performing practice. As a result of the research of written sources of the 12–19th cs. (chronicles, collections, administrative and spiritual literature, alphabets, lexicons and dictionaries), and of comparison of the interpretations presented in them, the author identified three main periods of historical change in the meaning of the term “Gudenie”. The earliest usage of the term “Gudenie” dates back to the ancient Russian monuments of the 12th century. At this time “Gudenie” meant playing string instruments. The meaning refers to the characteristic sound of strings when performing (humming), regardless of how the sound is extracted (bow or pinch). By the end of the 16th century, “Gudenie” acquires additional meanings: playing the “Gudok” or wind instruments. As study reveals the musical vocabulary of the Peter the Great era sees the basic interpretations of the term are made up, fixed and continuing to persist until the 20th century: playing the “Gudok” or musical instruments, as well as unpleasant and inconsistent bowing. |
