Abstract

Folk narrations about Marko the Rich — citing predictions (later come true) to the rich man that his successor and future son-in-law is to be a poor-man`s son and the rich man`s attempts of ruining him — belong among а number of popular stories in folklore (АaТh 930; SUS 930=461), including the southern and eastern Slavs. Earlier we identified two forms of the initial episode in the Slavic folk stories with this plot — “Marko on a lodging for the night” and “a legend about Christ on a visit at certain man”. Comparison of other episodes of the Slavic narratives about Marko the Rich revealed two varieties of this plot presented in them — “No flying from fate” and variant with an episode of travel to the Serpent. The initial episode “Marko on a lodging for the night” can be combined only with a species “No flying from fate”, whereas the initial episode in “the legend of Christ” is found in the texts correlating both with the versions of “No flying from fate” and “…with the Serpent”. While in the South Slavic texts with a plot AaTh 930 we find only one plotline`s variant — “No flying from fate” and only one form of the initial episode of these stories — “Marko on a lodging for the nigh”, in the East Slavonic texts about Marko the Rich we come across two forms of the introductory episode and two adaptations of this plot. Comparison of various variants of these Slavic narratives indicates that its earlier form is the combination of the initial episode “Marko on a lodging for the nigh” with the plot version “No flying from fate”. The additions to this basic form of the narrative (the initial episode of the “legend of Christ”, which N. F. Sumtsov considered to be an “accretion” that took place exclusively within Russian folk tradition, and the plot version of the narrative about Marko the Riche with the episode of the journey to the Serpent) come to be later accretions, developed within the framework of the East Slavic folk tradition.
