Abstract |
The paper aims to consider the artifact taking into account cultural environment and existing trends of the social, political and cultural life of the period under study. By the example of the Itinerants (Peredvizhnichestvo, “Society for Circulating Art Exhibitions”), a bright cultural phenomenon in Russian art of the latter half of 19th century, artifact`s study method was suggested, regarding the work of artists less known in comparison to the famous Society members. The Moscow artists I. P. Bogdanov, S. G. Nikiforov and an artist, teacher and enlightener N. N. Khokhryakov from Vyatka were chosen as representatives of the cultural environment of the distinguished Itinerants. Appealing to the example of their life and oeuvre the author provided a new insighton the movement of Itinerants (Peredvizhnichestvo) not only as a natural and large-scale phenomenon which came to life through realities of the reform period, but also as that grounded in the nature of artistic creative work — transforming surrounding reality by means of art, following the best examples of painting. The suggested method was called multi-level artifact method’. Its implementing allows both specialists and art lovers to deeper comprehend the cultural phenomenon, including the work of artists from “the cultural environment” and their contribution to the value of the artifact under study. |
