Abstract |
The paper discusses the works of Serbian medieval hymnography dedicated to St. Prince Lazar of Kosovo, distinguishes the cultural and historical context of Serbian national traditions, in terms of reflection of archetypical features of the Serbian mentality in the works of hymnology and interest to Slavic scholars and thinkers of the nineteenth century. According to I. I. Sreznevsky, P. I. Preis, V. I. Lamansky, K. N. Leontiev, heroic and volitional principle are inextricably linked for the Serbian archetype and national consciousness with the Christian worldview. The article provides a number of examples that show that the high pathos of Serbian literary texts is characteristic of both medieval and modern Serbian literature. Their representatives with high fervour praise the feats of arms, military valor, resistance to evil which goes back to the ancient tradition. In this regard, the epic songs of the Kosovo cycle and works of Church hymnography — Canon, stichera, praiseworthy words, etc., dedicated to Prince Lazarus and other Kosovar martyrs are particularly illustrative. The article notes that the works of Church hymnography and folk epic tradition developed in parallel, fueling each other in ideological, thematic and artistic terms. Special attention is paid to the facts of studying self-consciousness of the Serbian people and their collective memory in the works of outstanding Russian Slavists of the 19th century. These works were continued with by number of famous researchers of the 20th – early 21st century (V. A. Moshin, O. N. Trubachev, N. I. Tolstoy, I. F. Priyma, I. A. Charota, etc.). The paper considers some of these researchers' positions as the basis for further study of works of Serbian Church hymnography and folk songs of the Kosovo cycle, aiming to include them in the modern scientific context. |
