Abstract |
The article explores V. A. Pozhidaev`s figurative world, his organic applying of medieval spiritual singing and liturgical culture`s stylistics. The study demonstrates how the most important typological features of the Russian professional music — epic beginning, melodic spatial thinking that developed in Russia during medieval period — are manifested in the composer`s musical language. He mainly stylizes the `znamenny` chant, reproducing its modal, rhythmic features and prosody, the type of melodic movement and construction of the chant. The epic nature of artistic images is conveyed through the stylistics of the church chants of Rus’. Bell-ringing, an integral part of Russian culture, becomes an essential element of the musical language. Using the sound of bells, composer reveals deep psychological foundations of an Orthodox person. Addressing genres of medieval sacred music leads the author to harmonious, positive endings of the cycles, naturally resolving dramaturgic conflicts. The works of V. Pozhidaev are directly associated with the values of national traditional culture. These values are formed by the mentality developed owing to Orthodox Christianity, and the sacred music of Russia contributed to this in many respects. Appealing to the early layers of Russian professional music allowed the composer to create unique artistic images typical of Russia and therefore significant and deep in content. |
