Abstract

One of the most discussed issue of the modern folklore studies is related to the topic of tradition in popular folk culture of the modern world. It may seem that the traditional culture has disappeared and modern popular culture has nothing in common with the traditional folk culture and now lives on independently. That is apparently what young people are prone to believe nowadays. However, if we identify modern popular culture as a traditional one, this raises the question what the popular culture “traditional” really is and what is actually being passed on as tradition from one traditional culture to another: either the themes and forms of traditional culture as such or the practices of its translation. The authors highlight and examine the shifts in tradition`s development on a basis of the works of folk storytellers and today's tale-tellers. Undertaken analysis of mechanisms of tradition's translation draws upon modern love-confession graffiti and dream books.
