Abstract |
The South of Russia acts as a territory of interest for operating of new religious movements. The strategy of fighting extremism in the Russian Federation until 2025 defines the activities of a number of new religious associations as extremist and contributing to the development of ethnic and religious strife. At the same time, the southern Russian regions are the most exposed to external influence, including religious aspect. Methods: through institutional analysis, the study is to assess the activity of new religious movements in the Cossack environment. Analysis: Political and socio-cultural crisis in the border regions of Ukraine served as a source of support for a number of sects in the region. Among their priorities were activities in the Cossack communities. The infiltration of neo-paganism, sects of Western origin within the Cossack environment was detected at the level of leadership of regions of the Southern and North Caucasus Federal districts, as well as the Russian Orthodox Church. The issue of creation of Autocephalous “Church” for Cossacks, also constituting a destructive role, was actualized. Results: the paper evaluates the activity of new cults in the Cossack environment, as well as the attempts made by marginal groups of the Cossacks of creating the “Church” of their own. The study has identified the necessity of strengthening the efforts of the Executive authorities to combat totalitarian sects in the Southern Russian regions. |
