Abstract

The fundamental role of classic’s manuscripts legacy in study of his work is undoubted. Yet an individual handwritten also proves to be a rich source for describing creative process ― not only in paleographic (time and place) or textual (creating of a verbal image) sense, but in terms of its own “biography”. The Aksakov's collection of Gogol`s drafts was established by Gogol himself from those manuscripts and various papers that he had no need of and which he gave to K. S. Aksakov before leaving abroad in the summer of 1842. By this time, Gogol had almost completely prepared his first Collected Works (except for “The Gamblers” and “Leaving the Theater”, which he completes abroad). Since the importance of author`s drafts composition is indisputable, it is essential to know what Gogol considered unnecessary among them to get insight into his creative biography. However the subsequent fate of this manuscripts` collection is fraught with questions. The paper reconstructs one of this collection`s history episodes basing on unpublished letters from D. F. Samarin and N. S. Tikhonravov from the archival funds of the RSL.
