Abstract: |
The article deals with one of the culmination points in the novel which, however, rarely attracts the attention of literary critics, i.e. the scene on the Neva river. The imminent disagreement between Iljinskaya and Ilya Iliich is shown through specific visual features: the characters seem to speak, think and move in different planes, moving away from each other more and more. By using a number of symbols significant in the context of the whole novel, I. A. Goncharov made this rather small chapter rich in artistic, sometimes subtext information. The symbols are the image of river which is to separate them forever, «this» and «that» river banks, figure of a ferryman, constant mention of «a person» in the characters' dialogues, motif of cold, close to estrangement. |
