Abstract

The author attempts to reconstruct the biography of A.L. Gorbunkov, the first artistic director, instructor and consultant of Chukchi art workshops. The paper does not cover the entire biography of Gorbunkov, but outlines the events from his birth to his return from a business trip to Chukotka in late 1935. In the context of the activities of a professional artist, the research examines the process of the emergence of art workshops in Chukotka in the early 1930s, determines the moment and clarifies the reasons for the transition to an organized craft, still not fully studied in Russian science. To mark the place of Gorbunkov’s figure in the development of the Chukchi and Asian Eskimo walrus ivory-carving industry, the author provides insights into the peculiarities of the historical and cultural context of the first third of the 20th century and, further, presents he biographical information of the first artistic director of the Chukchi workshops and the main events of his work on the Chukchi Peninsula. The study reveals a corpus of previously unpublished archival materials, that makes it is possible to draw a general portrait of the founder of the first permanent ivory-carving workshops in Chukotka.
