The research was carried out with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation under scientific project No. 24-28-00692 “Technological features of paintings of the twentieth century: a comprehensive analysis”.

Abstract

The study, analysis and systematization of the ornamental system in the pictorial tradition of Christianity remain relevant in modern science. Researchers consider ornamental decor as an important component of the works of fine art and architecture and an independent type of artistic creativity. For centuries, scientists have emphasized in their writings the importance of ornament as a sign of attribution of the work of art. The huge variety and rare repetition of patterns placed on the background of late Russian icons makes us turn to a more detailed study of this phenomenon aiming to identify the works of Russian icon painting of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries with gilded ornamental backgrounds, through the prism of attribution. An integrated approach with a comprehensive study of the form and content of ornamental motifs makes it possible to detect identical characteristics and group together a number of identified and attributed works. The technological aspect acts as an important component in this process. Various methods of applying the ornament to the prepared surface are due not only to the time frame, but may carry a shade of the author's social affiliation. The study assesses the significance of historical texts in the process of attribution of an icon image. Stylistic, iconographic and compositional analysis of paintings, as well as the identification of signatures on works is a necessary component of the identification of a group of icons with a similar decoration system. The authors provide examples of a comprehensive study of works of late Russian icon painting with an ornamented gilded background. The creation of a visual database of icon paintings with ornamental backgrounds identified in the region will constitute a significant step in the study of this topic. The identification of the interrelationships of the ornament of embossed backgrounds of iconographic images with rizas, zincographic and lithographic images, carvings and monumental paintings allows us to expand the scope and outline the prospects for research.
