Abstract

“The Rock formation” is the last major lifetime work of the proletarian poet Demyan Bedny. Today it is forgotten and does not attract the attention of researchers. The paper for the first time introduces into scientific circulation archival documents, specifying the author’s work on this text. It was conceived by him as a poetic arrangement of the famous Ural tales by P.P. Bazhov. For the poet, who had recently experienced a period of disfavor and was expelled from the party, this work meant a return to great literature and was supposed to be evidence of the author’s loyal position. The study examines the relationship between Demyan Bedny and P.P. Bazhov and, first of all, restores the path of proletarian poet’s realization that in the case of Ural tales he was dealing not with actual folklore, but with a literary author’s text. That is why the versified Ural tales were never published during the lifetime of Demyan Bedny. Since it has become customary in Russian science to belittle the poet’s work in comparison with the original source, the paper attempts to see a certain literary value of Demyan Bedny’s “The Rock formation”, to consider the artistic originality of the arrangement made by the poet.
