Abstract: P. P. Virsky is one of the most outstanding dancers and a pioneer in the interpretation of Ukrainian folk dance on stage. He practically turned the history and development of folk choreography upside down by raising amateur folk arts to the level of high professionalism. The programs staged by him were characterized by poetical generalization of images which was so typical for Virksky. Humor, satire, heroics, lyrics could be found in these programs. His works have their particular dance peculiarity: dancers use not only their legs but also their body, each movement is greatly expressive and theatrical. P. P. Virsky was an innovator: he was the first to apply the elements of cinema in dance, he strived for livening up academic dance with the elements of a folk one and for giving it a meaning of theatrical action. There were two basic stylistic directions in the choreographer’s creative practice: in one of them realistic reflection of life arouse from the logic development of action and emotional condition of personages illustrated by the dancing and playing movements. Performances of this direction were composed of many minor details. Dance performances of the other direction reconstructed generalized images of the reality. P. P. Virsky created about 100 separate performances. He interpreted only Ukrainian folklore, on its basis he created both mass colorful choreographic performances and sincere lyric, heroic or humorous dance miniatures. Creative work of P. P. Virsky synthesized the achievements of a few generations of Ukrainian choreographers in the sphere of stage interpretation of folk dance. He used to rely upon traditions but he used them in a creative way enriching them with the experience of a professional classical dancer and a talented versatile choreographer.
