Abstract: After the World War II Germany became the scene of international discord of the former allies in the anti-German coalition. The German problem appeared one of the most critical among a number of the contradictions which had brought to the beginning of cold war. For understanding of contradictions sources of the USSR and the West countries it is important to nd out what aims they pursued in Germany and also how they perceived plans of the opposing party. The documents which are stored in the National archives of Great Britain, allow to track the evolution of the position of the British Foreign Ofce on the German problem in 1945-1949, and also to reveal their ideas about the USSR plans in the region. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs E. Bevin, as well as core staff of the Foreign Ofce gave the German question high priority in the context of post-war settlement. Thus, the policy of the USSR was considered only as aggressive, directed on establishment of communistic control over Germany, and by means of it over all Western Europe. So hardline stance of Great Britain signicantly promoted an aggravation of the international situation in the second half of the 1940.
