| Abstract: |
The draft of constitutional monarchy system of Russia by Boris N. Chicherin, a prominent Russian lawyer, major philosopher and public figure of the second half of ХIХ century, reflected the results of his ideological and political evolution and political philosophy. B. N. Chicherin began his political career as a liberal-progressist. Since 1861 Chicherin, who had been the mouthpiece of the liberal public before that, began a gradual retreat from the consistently liberal positions. He understood that the liberal radicalism, for all its moral purity and the thirst for complete renovation, required something not feasible, and was rather an obstacle to real reforms. The position of consistent conservatism was also unacceptable for B. N. Chicherin. He looked for the way out of unproductive dilemmas between one-sided liberalism and conservatism in the synthesis of the principles of liberalism and conservatism, that is, in liberal conservatism or, as he preferred to say, in liberal safeguarding. The task of liberal conservatism is to reconcile freedom and order, its aim is to move forward with the reforms while maintaining maximum stability of society. The draft of constitutional monarchy system in Russia, developed by Chicherin, was fully consistent with the basic principles of his conservative-liberal synthesis and may be considered as its most important part. The conservative-liberal synthesis of B. N. Chicherin can be an important lesson for the modern Russian political ideologists, who are often prone to use the clash of the principles of liberalism and conservatism instead of more careful attention to the conservative-liberal traditions in Russian social thought. |
