Abstract: The motif of historical memory appeared in the works of N. Yazykov in connection with the occurrence and development of interest in the history, people and folklore. Originality of his perception of historical memory lies in the understanding that «the spirit of old times» is necessary for the modern man. N. Yazykov tried to portray accurately the national life, culture, costumes, and the circumstances of life of people and, most importantly, the type of consciousness of historical figures and fictional characters in their interrelation in his works on historical themes. The Russian history allowed him to raise the burning issues of his time: freedom and tyranny, and to call his contemporaries to escape from spiritual slavery. The poet revealed the free spirit of the Slavs, the Russian people in the poems of the 1920-ies, using traditional poetics of folklore and ancient literature.
