Abstract: The following article deals with the historical and contemporary research traditions in the Austrian Slavonic studies. Giving a short overview on the development of this scientific discipline within the 19th and 20th centuries, the author stresses its specific characteristics: the main interest in Slavonic languages and their different scientific aspects. On this basis the article gives an insight into the actual education programs of Slavistics at Austrian universities and provides some details on the main research interests at the institutes of Slavonic studies in Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Innsbruck. Moreover, the author also mentions the gaps in these scientific and educational areas: the lack of a serious attention to the history of Slavonic countries, apart from a small research group of the institute of East-European history in Vienna.
