Abstract: The paper studies narrative minimum manifestations of imagery at the level of phrases in old Russian literary works (including «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign»), namely, artistic tropes different from the usual ones, transformations of abstract con- cepts into tangible objects, and objects into very different objects. This archaic trope was used by authors in the moments of strong emotions expressed on the issues of public interest. As time passed those archaic objectifications became incomprehensible. The author of «The Tale of Igor’s Campaign» tried to revive this stylistic means, but found no followers. «Zadonshchina» demonstrated a complete misunderstanding of ancient poetics and turned everything into plain tropes and symbols. In XVII century authors were turning to old folklore, they repeated only externally the means of imagery transformations of characters, but it took the form of magical lycanthropy. As a result, the poetics of transformations was constantly present in the old Russian literature.
