Abstract: Monasticism became a rather widespread and mass phenomenon in the time of Macedonian Renaissance (the second half of IX - the middle of XI cc.) This period is very interesting to the scholars for its developed cultural ideals and monastic traditions. The forms of monastic service are quite various in Macedonian Renaissance, but the main forms are only four - hermitage, celliotes, skete asceticism and monas-tic cenobium in two styles such as coenobia and idiorythm. All of them are aimed at reaching the ascetic ideal in Byzantine life which means «sanctity», connected to the salvation and acquisition of the eternal life in Christ. The manner of consumma-tion of the ascetic ideal depended on the concrete form of asceticism. Anchoreteship is the strictest and severest method to mount to the ascetic ideal. The ascetic ideal in its consecutive and accessible form was incarnated in monastic community, and it is proved by mass conversion into the monkhood in Macedonian Renaissance time and the popularity of the theme of cenobium monasticism in various theses and works of fiction and art.
