Abstract: Edvard Munch is a Norwegian artist who created his works on the verge of symbolism and expressionism and greatly the development of the latter. He often drew his inspiration from the literary works of his contemporaries. Munch’s creative contacts consisted mainly of writers and poets, and this led to the interpenetration of their works. The artist created portraits of men of the pen of his era, graphic in most, sharp and full of life, and many of them were portrayed as characters of his paintings. August Strindberg, Henrik Ibsen, Stanisław Przybyszewski, Sigbjørn Obstfelder, Hans Jaeger, and many others were among them. The article studies the features of this interaction and interpenetration, highlighting the main features and following the link between the main images of Edvard Munch’s works and literary images of the turn of XX century.
