| Abstract: | The cultural mosaic of modern Russian society has led to an increase in mésalliances — marriages in which educational and social status, national and regional culture, and religious beliefs of spouses differ greatly. As the result, the couple can have difficulties in establishing uniform rules of interaction in the family, which can lead to a marital conflict. An empirical study of young couples living in mésalliances and equal marriages was conducted. The study found that mésalliance is associated with the conflicts in the family. The harmonization of the spouses’ outlooks as for the most significant areas of family life — intimate and sexual relations, household, parent, professional, emotional and personal unity of partners — and their physical attractiveness was higher in equal marriages than in mésalliances. When misalliances are compared to equal marriages, it is shown that mismatch of family attitudes in areas such as the attitude towards people, the attitude towards autonomy or dependence of spouses, the attitude towards divorce, the evaluation of sexual sphere significance in family life was significantly higher in mésalliances than in equal marriages. |
