Abstract: |
The paper presents a version of attributing two XV century handwritten copies of the hagiography of St. Sergius of Radonezh based on the study of the characteristics of the author’s «ego» and the author's narrative style in the hagiographies of St. Sergius of Radonezh, Stephen of Perm, St. Cyril of Belozersk and Metropolitan Alexis. The problem of attributing the hagiography of St. Sergius of Radonezh can be solved by analyzing author’s style of Epiphanius the Wise and Pachomius the Logothete (only they are mentioned in the discussion of authorship of Sergius of Radonezh hagiography). Particular attention is paid firstly to the author's reference to himself in the text (first-person pronouns, singular or plural, first-person verb forms), and then, to the author's notes, comments, clarifications for a reader, favorite expressions and even the author's cliché, and thirdly, a specific author's manner of presenting a proper name in the hagiography texts. Based on the research the conclusion is made that the authorship of two handwritten copies of Sergius of Radonezh hagiography can be attributed to Pachomius the Logothete. |
