| Abstract: | Baron Munchausen was a German nobleman, who served in Russia and participated in the Russian-Turkish war. He became a literary character in the 80s of the XVIII century. Most of the adventures described in the book by Raspe-Burger, happened to Munchausen during war and hunting. During the trip to the North Pole Munchausen destroyed a lot of polar bears without urgent need. The moral evaluation of the act is found only in the Swedish translation of the German book. In other variants, the destruction of bears is seen as another heroic deed of Baron Munchausen. Trying to find an excuse for the character, the Swedish translator compares Munchausen with Samson who destroyed many armed enemies, and thus introduces and then develops a military theme. In the Russian translation by Osipov a military theme is missing, Munchausen is compared to Hercules, and, therefore, Russian translation is travesty description of heroic deeds of modern Hercules. In this case, a Russian translation of the book about Munchausen is closely related to «Virgil’s Aeneid Turned Inside Out» also by Osipov. Among many European translations of the book about Munchausen made in the XVIII century, Swedish and Russian versions have specific features. |
