Abstract: The paper raises the question of the depth and originality of perception of creativity of I. A. Goncharov in the Czech Republic, starting with the translation of the novel «Oblomov» in 1861. This peculiarity was reflected in translations and criticism of Goncharov’s works in the nineteenth century, and in modern Czech literary criticism. The historical reasons for the considerable interest of Czech critics to the works of Goncharov, the depth and subtlety of perception of his works in the Czech Republic in the heyday of the Slavophile and panslavists sentiment in Russia and the Czech Republic are explained. The paper examines the features of the Czech school of Goncharov studies in the context of other major schools, prevailing at present in Europe and the USA. Even amid the existing traditional schools in English-speaking and German-speaking Goncharov studies Czech school retains its original character and exclusive appeal, provided by the organic interpenetration of poetry and philosophy, and love for the Russian classics, which is well-felt by Russian native speakers.
