Abstract |
The article deals with one of the most problematic issues of the Slovak orthoepy — pronunciation of palatal ľ. This problem stems from the fact that the sound is usually absent in West Slovak dialect, as well as in the speech of many cities of Central Slovakia. Codifiers of the Slovak literary language had different point of view on the sound. At present, there is a special position of the sound l before vowels e and i and i-shaped diphthongs, because the majority of Slovaks do not pronounce palatal ľ. This, however, makes the positions of the phoneme [ľ] vulnerable, which in contrast to other paired palatal consonants does not appear here. Another weakness of this phoneme is due to the fact, that nouns ending in -l have declination in accordance with the nouns ending palatal consonants. |
