Abstract

The article deals with the parable-novel of I. A. Goncharov “Ukha (Fish soup)”, written presumably in July-August of 1891. The purpose of the article is to make adjustments to the prevailing view that the work concluding the literary biography of Goncharov is no more than a local Simbirsk joke about сuckolds and bold sexton. In a large measure novella represents a literary hoax, in which the story acts both as a joke about the misguided men, and as the gospel parable confronting the “wise and prudent” on the one hand, and deep believers “simpletons”, “babies” on the other hand. But perhaps Goncharov uses an everyday story about fishing on the Volga as an allegorical picture of the Apostolic Ministry, where sexton plays the role of an unlearned Apostle-fisherman, a “Fisher of men”, that completely changes the meaning of the work and its title. In “Ukha” Goncharov draws upon autobiographical motives of misunderstanding of the person by his environment and defends the sanctity of the human soul`s secret, relying not on the human opinion, but on the impartial judgment of God. “Ukha” is included in the context of the writer's works, which shows that in Russian literature Goncharov was the main defender of the human person and the mystery of the human soul accountable only to God.
