Abstract

Concepts reveals complex interrelationship of personal experience and the nature of culture, define multidimensionality of the mental world. The sphere of concepts of language creates the bases for formation of the cultural person perceiving and reproducing a national image of the world. The semantic field of the concept “patriotism” includes basic values of a civil and spiritual and moral order, with concept “fatherland” acting as the kernel. Substantial consistence of the word “fatherland” conditions both the view of culture “from within” and understanding of place and role of the country in the world history. The paper interprets concept “fatherland” as a culture constant and considers it in religious (the heavenly fatherland) and secular (the terrestrial homeland) contexts as exemplified by verbal (recorded in dictionaries) and visual (icon) cultural texts. The author discovers sociocultural meaning of the concept “patriotism”, its dependence on ideology and socio-political interests and demonstrates that emphasis on religious meaning of a concept “fatherland” facilitates fuller understanding of its cultural value and allows specifying the directions of patriotic education.
