Abstract |
The paper explores the folk culture of Middle Burgenland in the Austro- Hungarian frontier. Traditionally, Croatian Burgenland, or Gradishte, as it is called by Croatian settlers, is divided into Northern, Middle and Southern. All three parts differ in dialects and certain lexical features including terminology of traditional folk culture. The article analyzes main motives in people's culture of Middle Burgenland: there are villages Groβwarasdorf and Kleinwarasdorf, Nikitsch, Kroatisch Minihof, Geresdorf, Frankenau, Unterpullendorf, Nebersdorf on the Austrian side; Und, Peresznye, Horvátzsidány, Ólmod are in Hungary. The author conducted field ethnolinguistic study (2007–2017) in all abovementioned villages, all collected data forming the basis of the work. The article shows similarities and differences in the folk calendar and mythology of Middle Burgenland characterizing rural traditions of Croats in Austria and Hungary. The paper also highlights archaic features of traditional folk culture on both sides of the border. |
