Abstract

The article studies the works of the Russian modern composer Tatyana Georgievna Smirnova in terms of the “style of epoch” issue. T. G. Smirnova is the author of over five hundred works of various genres. The master is known for her bright musical style, individual and deeply national style based on tradition and expressed through modern means of composing. The paper examines the works of Smirnova in relation to the style trends of Russian music of the second half of the 20th century. It reveals an organic connection of the composer with such key trends in the development of Russian music of this period, as an appeal to the Russian and spiritual culture, neo-styles and neo-canonical trends as well as great interest of T. G. Smirnova in foreign cultural influences. In general the paper explores the issue from two sides — in chronological terms and in relation to the prevailing music styles and trends of the twentieth century. The given perspective allows to show the specificity of the composer's life placing it in the context of historical time.
