Abstract

The subject of creativity was always among top spots in the aesthetics of Russian symbolists. The latter thought of two different creative methods in the history of art — realism and idealism — which during their times were being transformed into realistic and idealistic types of symbolism. Speaking of symbolism itself, its theoreticians singled out three creative stages: thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. In addition, they highlighted two stages in creativity: ascent and descent in the process of creating artistic symbols. Some of them believed that the principal goal of creativity is theurgy, which, using aesthetic principles, takes creativity out of the sphere of art into real life.
