Abstract

This article is devoted to the cultural and semantic research of the work “Suitcase” by S. D. Dovlatov. The paper explores language tools that actualize the randomness of the things enumeration and the linearity of memories. It also deals with the socio-cultural space of the narration and the author's modality, objectified through the quality of the things, in terms of semantics of the oppositions. The author focuses on the meanings representing absurdity and the discord with reality as a norm of creative person`s life. The study identifies main semantic oppositions of the work: Soviet — anti-Soviet, freedom — lack of freedom, intelligence — non-intellectualism, man — beast, prince — beggar, etc. Investigating the artistic discourse through the image of  object (thing)  the author reconstructs fragments of the conceptual worldview.

Keywords
