Abstract

The article deals with a decorative and applied art of the Middle Volga region of the mid-XIX – the end of the XX centuries. It focuses, more specifically, on a wood carving and its use in decorating everyday life items and tools. Basing on the analysis of archival documents, museum funds and literary sources, the paper confirms the thesis about distinctiveness of certain elements of decorative and applied art of the Middle Volga region, namely wooden everyday life items with carving. Authors have managed to highlight it in spite of the lack of a clearly expressed regional identity, due to the peculiarities of the region`s development. The authors pay special attention to the activities of the Zhigulevsk`s factory of decorative products which, during 1960–1980s stood at the head of the Middle Volga region`s production of souvenirs, wooden utensils and other items of decorative and applied art.
