Abstract |
The paper studies a methodological issue highly topical for creating the anthology “Orthodox Old Belief as One of the Faces of Russian Civilization”. A concrete methodology will allow us to compile an actual collection in which the Old belief will appear not as a museum property, but as a living and interesting example of “parallel Russia”. The second block — texts about the Old believers (polemical, dialogical, philosophical, research, artistic) — illustrates not only different epochs of religious freedom in the history of Russia, but also the transformation of the most traditional spirituality. To approach the analysis of the Old believers spirituality we need an integral religious methodology currently unavailable. Old believers are perceived from the standpoint of ideology or cultural studies, or philosophy of history. None of these positions helps us to fully analyze the Old believers mentality, culture, everyday life and activity. Yet each position contains meaningful elements, which we intend to use. To a certain extent socio-economic approach is also acceptable. Our main task is building a synthetic methodology, including religious, cultural, socio-philosophical, and history-philosophical analysis. The author's concept of “post-religion” (applicable to modern Old believer) is based on the concept of development of the Ancient Orthodoxy following “Tradition — Religion — Post-religion” stages. Such an approach allows to see the mentality of Old believers in their reaction to modern spirituality and to trace the existence and functioning of the Old believers mentality in our days. The genealogy of the traditional spiritual phenomenon and its transition to the present post-traditional format is a topic of particular relevance, taking into account present religious galvanization and neo-fundamentalism. The study of classical and modern Old belief makes it possible to understand many of the nuances of these processes. |
