Abstract

The paper represents a review on a selection of scientific articles published in the journal “Vestnik Kostromskogo gosudarstvennogo universiteta”, dedicated to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the great Russian writer Maxim Gorky. Upon the decision by UNESCO to include the name of Gorky in the calendar of memorable dates, his celebration acquired world status: this year Gorky`s festivals will be held at the cultural and scientific sites of Belarus, Italy, France and South Korea. The paper raises the issue of Gorky's heritage coverage in modern studies and the existence of untouched scientific topics. The articles written by the staff of the world leading scientific Gorky center in IWL RAS, where on the basis of archival materials since 1937 they carried out preparation and publication of his heritage, allow for raising the question on the level of knowledge in modern Gorky studies and setting new tasks. According to the author`s conclusions the most acute topic now is the Gorky’s attitude to “disenfranchised”, “mechanical people”, to the prison system, to intelligentsia and new hero, new style of literature, which became major themes in writer’s journalism and his letters in the 1930s. The reviewed articles revealed the archival and documentary potential of the Gorky theme, and also indicated to the need of abandoning the ready-made conceptual schemes and approaches to the heritage of the “proletarian writer”.
