Abstract

The present article is to study the “Narrative about Dovmont”, the Old Russian literary work of the older period. The information about Dovmont, prince of Pskov, is contained in Lithuanian, Pskov and other common Russian sources. However, the “Narrative about Dovmont”, originated in Pskov, is considered to be the main source. The “Narrative about Dovmont” is a collection of the Old Russian literary works telling us about the 13th century events on the north-west border of Russia and depicting their main protagonist Dovmont-Timothy, prince of Pskov. Yet it is not a cycle of works in the true (literary) sense of the word, nor is it a series of tales about a concrete character related to some similar repeated events. It should rather be called the historiographic cycle. The “Narrative about Dovmont”, passing form one chronicle into another, underwent certain changes ranging from political views expressed in the text treatment to increasing or decreasing text volume. Furthermore, under the influence of stylistic simplification of the text, the information on Dovmont could acquire a more businesslike style, or, on the contrary, more literary one of a particular genre, which didn’t often correspond to the general character of the text revision. The paper has addressed following text versions: Prolozhnaya which is known only in two handwritten variants (both dated back to the end of the 14th — beginning of the 15th century); the version in the 1st Chronicle of Pskov. Among the lives of the Russian saints, prince Dovmont, perhaps, is the only saint notable for having various literary images in different text versions of the “Narrative”.
