Abstract

The paper is to analyze the rites of Palm Sunday and Holy Thursday religious holidays. It attempts to reveal an interrelationship between Russian and Ukrainian features of these holidays. The author follows the methodology of Moscow Ethnolinguistic School and the paper is based on the fieldwork data of the Centre for Typological and Semiotic Folklore Studies collected in several villages of the Ukrainian enclave in Saratov region in 2012‒2016. It focuses on the celebration of these holidays in the past — in 1950s‒1970s. The analysis of these holidays showed that the culture of this enclave is not homogeneous. Besides describing dialectal features of these rites, the author compares the festive tradition in this enclave with those in other regions of Ukrainian migration as with the tradition in Ukraine.

Keywords

Folklore, folk dialects, Ukrainian enclave, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, religious holidays.
