Abstract

The paper is to study and systematize the variety of orthodox religious processions in rural areas of Western Siberia of the pre-revolutionary period. A range of nation-wide and local historical events directly affected rural religious life including religious processions. The analysis of pre-revolutionary periodicals (The Tomsk diocesan sheets) allowed to display facts of mass traditions of holding religious processions by rural societies on occasion of any historical event, with initiative of such actions belonging both to the authorities and rural societies. In most cases the parish church served as an initial or starting point of religious processions which in case of recurrence of the course could be a terminal point as well. Shrines, cemeteries, chapels, buildings acted as passing points of the courses were the procession`s main objects in honor. Among the variety of traditional religious processions, relating the territory of Western Siberia the author identifies the following ones: associated with main orthodox holidays; associated with events from life of an imperial family; on occasion of capital historical and political events. As for regional religious processions in villages of Western Siberia at the turn of the 20th century they used to be held on occasion of local scale events maintaining classical forms and procedures of such cult processions. One may determine their main versions as follows: dated to the venerated orthodox shrines; associated with natural events and agrarian activity; timed to the opening of various institutions or visits of high-ranking officials; associated with traditional secular rural actions.
