Abstract

The paper explores the issue of the spread of education among factories` workers in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries. Care for the development of domestic education constituted one of the main expense items of Vladimir, Kostroma and Yaroslavl philantropists. Realizing the need to increase the level of education of the population and employees of their enterprises, merchants and industrialists initiated the opening of educational institutions and allocated funds for their maintenance. Factory schools, additional training in the craft contributed to the spread of elementary education. Adding special subjects or courses among workers helped to create qualified personnel for certain industries, improving the quality of work.
