Abstract: Ethnohistorical myths of ancient origin, of autochthonous and glorious historical past of modern nations are particularly popular in periods of social and political conflicts. The Illirian myth is one of such myths spread in the Western Balkans at the end of XX - the beginning of XX centuries. It has an unique role as for centuries it was the ideological basis of the national movements of all Slavic peoples of the Western Balkans. It was developed by Serbian, Slovenian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Boshnyatsk intellectuals with the aim to create and preserve independent Slavic states in the Balkans.
